A deadly 8.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Chile’s coast on September 16. The quake was one of the biggest to strike the Earth’s surface this year. Despite the epicentre being about 50km inland, a tsunami advisory was issued for the Pacific Ocean. The earthquake was followed by multiple strong aftershocks (red circles on global map). The seismic waves generated from these strong earthquakes were recorded by many seismic stations across the world, including those on Malta. Locally two earthquakes struck about 100km away, in the south of Malta, on September 20 and 23 (red stars). No felt reports were submitted to the University of Malta’s Seismic Monitoring Research Group website http://seismic.research.um.edu.mt.
