A new Construction Industry Skill Card will eventually be required for all public procurement contracts.

The card, being launched by the Building Industry Consultative Council later this year, is intended to improve and maintain the highest standards in the construction industry.

It will become mandatory in five years’ time and cardholders will be required to update their card every five years.

Updating a card will require the completion of a health and safety awareness course as well as courses covering innovations in the trade.

The first trades to be hosted by the scheme are plumbers, assistant electricians, decorators and tile layers.

In a statement BICC chairman Charles Buhagiar said the card would significantly reduce the number of accidents in the industry, curb unfair competition, and ensure fair service.
