A skill cards scheme proposed by the government yesterday will see construction workers certified for competence and safety training.

Proposals for the scheme were published in a White Paper by the Social Dialogue Ministry and the Education Ministry in association with the Building Industry Consultative Council. It is being backed by the Developers' Association.

The white paper proposes five skill cards for apprentices, labourers/operators, skilled labourers with at least three years experience, people with managerial experience and professionals such as architects, who, the ministers said, need certain skills on site management.

Dr Dalli said the scheme would lead to greater professionalism and safety in construction sites.

An information meeting for construction workers and professionals will be held at the Old University in Valletta today at 6pm.
