Malta welcomes and supports the proposed political agreement aimed at the formation of a Libyan unity government, the Foreign Ministry said this afternoon.

"The Libyan people have endured so much suffering since 2011. Many Libyans died, others were displaced and the humanitarian situation continues unabated. The political agreement announced by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Bernardino Leon, constitutes the structures that could lead the Libyan people towards reconciliation and normality," the ministry said.

"Malta now calls on all Libyans to fully support this political agreement. It is imperative that the personalities nominated to form the new government are assisted to implement the various measures outlined in the agreement. Malta encourages Libya's political leaders to put aside all differences and endeavour towards peace, progress and prosperity."

The ministry said Malta remains ready to offer its assistance to the friendly people of Libya.
