The name Giugiaro immediately conjures up images of beautifully designed, iconic cars, from the 1969 Abarth 1600GT and 1971 Alfa Romeo Alfasud to the 1974 Volkswagen Golf, 1979 Lancia Delta, 1983 Fiat Uno, and Ferrari GG50, a concept car created by Ferrari to mark Giorgetto Giugiaro’s 50 years of designing cars.

“We are a creative foundation,” Fabrizio Giugiaro says. “My father always likes to say that he has a passion for drawing and for making new shapes. It’s this passion which inspires us to design anything. Of course, car design gets more media attention – however, we have designed more industrial projects than cars.

“We have also been involved in boat design since the 1970s. Apart from commercial projects, we have also designed a 50-metre boat for an individual client which is still on the water today.”

The Valletta Boat Show will host the Chaudron 45 G-Edition Specially Made for Fabrizio Giugiaro, which will be for the first time in water in Malta.

We had a very interesting discussion about taking the elements of a racing boat and translating them into a daily powerboat

“I met Charles and Aaron Ciantar from Chaudron completely by chance, when I was invited to Malta by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca. The Ciantars and I had a very interesting discussion about taking the elements of a racing boat and translating them into a daily powerboat. The result is the Chaudron 45 G-Edition Specially Made for Fabrizio Giugiaro.”

The boat is fuelled by the Ciantars’ racing pedigree – Chaudron won three consecutive championships in the SuperSport category, the 2011 Key West World Championship, the V1 European Championship and four world titles.

Yet the 45-foot boat is the perfect example of a tamed beast.

“The performance is still extraordinary,” Giugiaro says. “Its two Mercury 1,100hp engines push it to a maximum speed of 120mph. However, it’s a boat which despite its power, can be handled and manoeuvred with ease.

“It’s also a comfortable boat. If you had a very fast car with uncomfortable seats, you wouldn’t like driving it. For this boat, we worked with Sparco on bucket seating that combines comfort with a sportive style.”

The boat’s large cockpit can accommodate 12 people and enough space to keep all occupants comfortable.

“You can walk on the deck, which can also be hydraulically elevated. This allows for more practicality – by elevating the deck, people have enough space to stand up beneath the deck.”

Packing style, performance, precision fit and finish, the Chaudron 45 G-Edition Specially Made for Fabrizio Giugiaro will certainly turn heads. What is also eye-catching is its camouflage pattern.

“Camouflage is currently a very popular trend,” Giugiaro says. “It also gives the boat an element of stealth. However, underneath the pattern are simple lines. Everything was designed with simplicity in mind: for instance, the two big intakes are in a very good position for the engine, yet they still don’t interfere with the clean lines.

“For me, simplicity is everything. Remove the camouflage and you have a pure, simple design.”
