Yachting Malta is a public private partnership between the Government of Malta and the Royal Malta Yacht Club.

Since its launch by Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in April 2015, Yachting Malta has consulted with various yachting stakeholders while carrying out research with the aim of identifying the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Malta as a yachting destination. This process was launched in order to be able provide consultative experience to Government and the relevant authorities in identifying areas where Malta can further develop its yachting potential.

The consultative process and research carried out will serve as a basis for the development of a business plan which will be launched in December 2015 and ready for operation in 2016 in order to be able place Malta in a prominent position on the international yachting map.

This business plan will serve to promote Malta’s leading name, reputation, competitiveness and long tradition as a yachting and cruising destination in the Mediterranean.

Yachting is a lucrative and sophisticated industry. Ensuring excellence throughout the sector on a national level will be Yachting Malta’s target in order to maximise the multiplier effect on the economy.

Yachting Malta is backed by a number of ministries, including the Ministries for Energy and Health, Sports, Tourism and Transport, leading to a holistic business approach towards the industry.

To date Yachting Malta has identified a number of key areas of focus for its operations. These include identifying and attracting to Malta new high profile yachting events including regattas, class sailing, power racing events, boat shows, conferences and other activities related to yachting while supporting already established events.

Yachting Malta is also developing a one-stop support shop concept to assist private individuals in overcoming bureaucratic barriers and ensure that yachting related projects and events are implemented in a timely and efficient manner. Yachting Malta will also establish an experienced team to carry out the marketing and promotion of Malta as yachting destination as well as to increase the exposure of Malta within upmarket tourism and yachting circles.

Yachting Malta will serve as a consultative voice to government regarding the development of new yachting related infrastructural projects and will help foster and promote sailing and associated activities with emphasis on the young and new sailors of all ages. Yachting Malta aims to widen the reach of sailing as a sport to the widest audience possible through the assistance of sailing clubs in their preparation for future yachting and racing needs.

Other key areas include: developing a policy, fiscal and legislative think-tank in synch with the Integrated Maritime Policy and the Malta Maritime Law Association; developing a tailor-made Gozo yachting strategy in conjunction with the Ministry for Gozo; focusing on the environment to ensure Malta’s long-term attractiveness and crystal clear waters as a yachting destination; and promoting Malta as a yachting destination for super yachts. The aim is to make Malta a more attractive yachting destination and wintering base for this niche industry. Yachting Malta is also currently working on the development of a chartering and visiting yachts strategy as well as a yacht services strategy for berthed yachts and yard services.

Yachting Malta fully endorses the Valletta Boat Show and looks forward to support and empower new innovative events related to the yachting sector. For more information visit www.yachtingmalta.org.
