Northern Ireland and Portugal have booked their place in the Euro 2016 finals but Germany were made to wait after suffering a surprising 1-0 defeat in Ireland last night.

Northern Ireland had not been seen at a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup but that will all change in France next summer after an unforgettable 3-1 victory over Greece in Belfast ensured a top-two finish in Group F.

Michael O’Neill’s men knew three points would be enough to make history and, when Davis stabbed home Stuart Dallas’ 35th-minute cross, the promised land moved a mighty step closer.

But this was not a night when the Green and White Army would squeak home – this was a party.

Kilmarnock forward Magennis – a converted goalkeeper who had never scored an international goal before – made it two with a deft header and the inspirational Davis nodded in his second just before the hour mark.

In Braga, Joao Moutinho rifled home in the 66th minute to secure Portugal’s qualification as they beat Denmark 1-0 in Group I.

Portugal top the group on 18 points, six ahead Denmark and seven ahead of Albania, who lost 2-0 at home to Serbia.

Nicklas Bendtner‘s early second-half shot came back off a post before Moutinho broke the deadlock, collecting a poor defensive header and jinking into position before rifling the ball past Kasper Schmeichel.

Denmark have completed their qualification campaign and sit out the last match day on Sunday, while Portugal are away Serbia and Albania travel to Armenia where they can snatch second spot with a win.

Ireland stunned world champions Germany 1-0 thanks to Shane Long‘s 70th minute strike to throw Group D wide open and maintain their chances of booking a spot at the finals with a game left to play.

Long latched on to a deep cross from goalkeeper Darren Randolph to drill past Manuel Neuer and take Ireland, who visit Poland on Sunday, level on 18 points with their next opponents.

Leaders Germany, who have 19 points and only needed a draw to qualify in Dublin, next host Georgia.

The Germans took control of the game with some swift passing and lots of movement off the ball and had a couple of early chances, with the unmarked Jerome Boateng missing the target with a header.

The visitors gradually eased off, however, allowing Ireland more space and as the hosts grew in confidence they were almost caught on the break when Andre Schuerrle fired over the bar.

Ireland continued to work hard and were rewarded when Randolph’s long kick sent Long clear to beat Neuer with a powerful shot.

Thomas Mueller should have levelled with a close-range effort seven minutes later but the hosts held on for a memorable win.

Poland stayed on course to reach Euro 2016 after Robert Lewandowski scored in stoppage time to grab a last-gasp 2-2 draw against Scotland, whose hopes of qualifying ended yesterday.

Poland stayed second in Group D with 18 points and know that victory at home to Ireland, who also have 18 points, in their final match on Sunday will book their spot.

Scotland, who had led until the dying seconds at Hampden Park, a result that would have kept alive their qualification hopes, are now out of the race with 12 points.

Prolific form

Lewandowski continued his prolific form when he opened the scoring in the third minute, sliding the ball past keeper David Marshall.

The hosts drew level with a rasping left-footed shot from Matt Ritchie beyond the reach of Poland keeper Lukasz Fabianski on the stroke of halftime.

Better was to come for the Scots when Steven Fletcher curled home a superb effort in the second half, whipping the home crowd into a frenzy.

That enthusiasm was dampened, however, when news filtered through that Ireland were beating Germany and a sour end to the evening was completed when Lewandowski levelled four minutes into stoppage time, squeezing the ball in from close range.
