Għajnsielem and Xewkija Tigers registered victories in their last matches from the GFA Division One league to confirm their potential as serious title challengers.

Għajnsielem scored an impressive 6-0 win over Victoria Hotspurs who were coming from two consecutive wins but the Tigers had to work overtime to beat SK Victoria Wanderers 2-1.

Għajnsielem held command of play but had to wait until the 44th minute to open the score through a lob by player-coach Shaun Bajada. The Blacks continued to dictate matters after the break and scored on five other occasions to seal a resounding win.

Joseph Attard doubled the score on 50 minutes and Dhonatan Santos Da Hora added another two minutes later.

Ferdinando Apap made it 4-0 with a fine header and Da Hora scored two more goals late on to complete his hat-trick.

The Hotspurs’ best chance to score a consolation goal came on 75 minutes when a strike by Miguel Montano hit the woodwork.

Xewkija opened the score against the Wanderers on 42 minutes when Thiago Melo Dos Santos headed home from a Daniel Bogdanovic free-kick.

The Wanderers, however, levelled matters in first-half stoppage time thanks to an Ajibade Adesina goal but they failed to extend their momentum to the second half.

Xewkija hit back and scored the goal that mattered through Chris Camilleri.

In another match, Kerċem forgot all about the upset in their league opener the weekend before as they beat Oratory Youths 2-1 to put down their first points in the table.

The Youths went close on two occasions when efforts from Anderson Ribeiro were stopped by the Ajax goal frame.

Kerċem opened the score through Shaun Attard on 32 minutes but Christian Mercieca equa-lised for Oratory with a free-kick from the distance that surprised keeper Adrian Parnis.

No team managed to impose any kind of supremacy on the pitch but midway through the second half Malcolm Vella found a way through to put the Ajax in front.

The Youths tried hard to save the match but their hopes were dashed when Christian Mercieca was sent off for dissent in the dying minutes.

Division Two

Rivals Xagħra United and Nadur Youngsters figured in a one-all draw in the top match from Division Two last weekend.

Brandon Said put Nadur in front on 19 minutes and Xagħra scored their equaliser through Daniel Bartolo soon after the restart.

The Youngsters had Ryan Meilak sent off late on.

Sannat Lions were in a class of their own as they trounced Munxar Falcons 6-1 to go second in the table, one point behind Xagħra.

Josiah Buttigieg, Daniel Borg, Mark Muscat (penalty), Antoine Camilleri (2) and Eric Gauci scored for the Lions.

Munxar, who had Matthew Galea sent off on 68 minutes, scored their only goal from a penalty converted by Mario Azzopardi.

Sannat also had a red-carded player as Justin Micallef was given his marching orders on 81 minutes.

In another match Qala Saints obtained a 2-0 win over Għarb Rangers, the goals for the winners coming through Alan Cini.
