As an American, I watched televised coverage of Pope Francis’s historic first-ever visit to the US as well as the speech to a joint session of Congress (combined session of Senate and Houseof Representatives).

Francis drew immense applause when he said he was happy to be standing in “The Home of the Free and the Land of The Brave”.

He also drew applause when he noted “The Golden Rule”. I was especially impressed when Pope Francis noted that “business is a noble profession”.

He reminded the senators and congressmen/women that they are charged to be ethical representatives of the people; as well as to value the life of every human being.

His presence energised America and illustrated a genuine sense of humility. I think it is vital that people throughout the world recognise that Pope Francis was not just making a speech in his role solely as the Bishop of Rome, or as the Pope of the Catholic Church, but as a Head of State. He governs The Holy See of Vatican City.

It is a small nation with its own small territory, coins, currency, postage stamps and ambassadors to other nations.

Pope Francis demonstrated that he is truly a world leader with influence, wisdom and kind benevolence. He asked people to pray for him: I will. He asked those people who don’t believe or cannot pray to “send good wishes my way”.

I will even do that, too. God bless him.
