The first ranking tournament of the 2015-16 season, organised by the Malta Pool Association, came to a close recently with a series of finals in different categories.

Johann Attard showed he had lost none of his touch during the off-season as he produced some polished displays on his way to claiming the title in the Open competition.

In the final, Attard underlined his fine form by beating Kevin Mercieca 8-3 to secure useful points in the national rankings list.

The Under-18s tournament was keenly contested with Dejan Grech emerging winner after a convincing 7-1 victory over Scott Muscat in the title match.

Ryan Pisani won the U-23 competition following an 8-4 win over Dylan Cassar in the final and, in the Over-40s, Ray Caruana had the better of Sirio Baldacchino 8-5.

The 2015-16 ranking tournaments, six in all, will determine national team selections for the European and World Championships to be played in France and England, respectively, later this season.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the second ranking event will be played at the Ian Sports Club, Żebbuġ, next week.
