The Unscheduled Bus Service is calling for a minor staggering of school hours, restrictions on heavy vehicles during rush hour and fines for people involved in small collisions who do not quickly remove their vehicles from the roads.

In a statement, the UBS complained about worsening road congestion, saying some trips which used to take half an hour are now taking two hours.

It expressed solidarity with motorists and said the situation was leading to complaints about delays, not least in the tourism sector.

In a list of suggestions, the association called for a staggering of the hours of government schools by about 15 minutes; incentives for parents to use organised transport to take their children to school; restrictions on heavy vehicles during rush hour, action to stop the watering of planters on centre strips during rush hour, blocking lanes; a greater presence of the police and wardens to control traffic;

Fines for those involved in front to rear collisions who block the lanes instead of filling in the form and promptly removing their vehicles; controls on local councils that indiscriminately issue permits for the closure of roads, such as for the use of cranes; an assessment of the impact on open markets which block roads; faster road works and better management of appointments at hospitals, health centres and the courts, where, invariably all appointments are for 9am.
