The government is to hold a review of safety in public events in the wake of the the crash during the Paqpaqli motorshow which injured 28.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this afternoon that after a Cabinet discussion, he had asked Social Dialogue Minister Helena Dalli to review  current legislation and regulations governing safety at public events.

Controversy has erupted over inadequate barriers to protect spectators, amid uncertainty over who was actually responsible for the safety aspects of last Sunday's event.

In a statement, Dr Dalli said she had appointed Dr Mark Gauci, CEO of the Occupational Health and Safety Authority to evaluate current legislation regarding safety at public events.

The review should include laws and regulations, the responsibilities of organisers, the structures of government entities who have a role and, and the needs and shortcomings regarding the granting of permits including conditions which may be imposed.

The review should be concluded by the end of the year.
