The Maltese waterpolo team will meet world champions and hosts Serbia, Croatia and France in the European Championship after the draw was made in Belgrade yesterday.

Malta secured an historic qualification for the final tournament after beating Switzerland and Poland in the second qualifying Group G competition, played here the weekend before last.

Karl Izzo’s team collected a total of nine points in the two qualifying tournaments.

Serbia will again face traditional rivals Croatia after defeating them 11-4 last August to lift the world championship title.

In all, 16 teams were involved in yesterday’s draw with Malta placed in Pot 4 along with Slovakia, Georgia and Turkey.

The Euro Championship will be staged in Belgrade between January 10 and 26, 2016.
