PSV: Gaston Pereiro emerged as a new hero as PSV Eindhoven re-established hegemony in the Dutch league by ending the unbeaten run of Ajax with a 2-1 away win yesterday. Uruguayan Pereiro scored both goals for the champions, who have shrugged off their early season slumber to move within two points of joint leaders Ajax and Feyenoord. Pereiro, playing in place of Maxime Lestienne who had to pull out of the match for what PSV called “family reasons”, netted after seven minutes only for the lead to be cancelled out three minutes later when Amin Younes scored his first goal for Ajax. Pereiro then snatched a 79th minute winner.

Giovinco: Sebastian Giovinco celebrated his call-up to the Italy squad by scoring his 21st goal of the Major League Soccer season as Toronto beat the Philadelphia Union 3-1. Giovinco put the home side ahead from a free-kick in the 28th minute, though there was a large element of luck as the ball struck a defender’s head and took a wicked deflection into the net.

Olympiakos: Olympiakos Piraeus chalked up their sixth win in as many games yesterday as an impressive first-half display and quality saves from Spanish goalkeeper Roberto secured a 2-0 victory at PAOK Salonika. Marco Silva’s men, who secured a historic first win in England with their stunning 3-2 midweek Champions League victory at Arsenal, refused to be intimidated by the hostile atmosphere at the Toumba Stadium. The result left PAOK in fifth place, eight points adrift of the leaders.

In Sweden: Two goals from Emir Kujovic put unfancied Norrkoeping a step closer to their first Swedish title since 1989 as his side beat Haecken 3-1 at home yesterday. Norrkoeping moved onto 60 points, two ahead of IFK Gothenburg who were held to a 1-1 draw by Halmstad. In Stockholm, AIK beat last term’s champions Malmo 2-1 thanks to a goal in each half from Henok Goitom and Stefan Ishizaki as they stayed three points behind the leaders.
