Cynergi Virtus Falken got their 2015/16 campaign off to a bright start yesterday after winning the Super Cup at the expense of Gżira Athleta. In the women’s showdown, champions Caffe Moak Luxol saw off the challenge of Gżira Athleta 69-53 to retain the trophy. In a balanced and hard-fought men’s final, champions Virtus came through a difficult start to overwhelm Athleta in the final two sessions for a 63-55 victory. Athleta’s hopes of winning the first trophy of the season looked bright after they finished the opening quarter 10 points in front. They managed to retain their lead at half-time, 33-25, but Virtus lifted their performance as the game progressed. After winning the third quarter 19-13 to further narrow the gap, Paul Ferrante’s team dominated the final seven minutes to secure victory. David Bugeja was the game’s top scorer with 30 points for Virtus while the returning Michael Naudi notched 18 for Athleta. This year’s Super Cup finals were sponsored by the Għaqda Ġurnalisti Sports (Malta Sports Journalists Association).
