Labour MP Deborah Schembri has become the second Labour MP to publicly voice her opposition to the introduction of embryo freezing, a proposal made by Nisa Laburisti and backed by the prime minister.

Dr Schembri told the newspaper Illum that if the Labour Party took a position in favour of embryo freezing, she would face a dilemma and she could not vote in favour because it conflicted with her conscience.

Should the matter come before Parliament, Dr Schembri said MPs should be granted a free vote since this was not a matter which was in the electoral programme.

Dr Schembri said she viewed embryo freezing as the freezing of human life.

The proposal for embryo freezing is also being publicly opposed by Labour MP Marlene Farrugia. Last month she said she would not support the introduction of any law that compromises the protection of any born or unborn child.
