The HeforShe campaign, a United Nations initiative in which men promote gender equality was launched last night by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.

The President has been selected by the UN as one of 10 heads of states who are promoters of the campaign.

The campaign is aimed mostly at men and underlines their role in bring about equality. 

It was launched during Notte Bianca, where President Coleiro Preco said no society could claim to be mature and developed if there was no gender equality.  

Ten personalities and groups are taking part in a promotional video to promote the campaign. They are the Edgar Preca (the President's husband), Kevin Valencia (PWC senior partner), Herman Grech (Times of Malta digital editor), Xandru Grech (former athlete and coach), Prof. Dominic Fenech (academic), Alan Montanaro (actor and teacher), Michael Grech (businessman), Red Electrick (band), Felix Busuttil (dance teacher) and Oliver Scicluna (president of the National Commission for Disability).

The President's Foundation for the Welfare of Society will be holding discussions to promote the message of the campaign.
