San Ġwann 2
Vittoriosa Stars 3

Vittoriosa Stars registered their first victory of the season following a five-goal thriller against San Ġwann who are still without a win.

The early stages were bereft of scoring opportunities with Vittoriosa gradually gaining hold of proceedings and taking the lead on 28 minutes when Steven Meilaq slotted home a rebound after Saints goalkeeper Matthew Grech had stopped Liam Gauci’s effort.

Three minutes later a Milan Lukic free-kick just missed Grech’s goal but the Saints drew level with their first attempt at goal just before half-time.

They were awarded a free-kick on the left and Alan Borg’s delivery was met by Nikolai Muscat who headed home the equaliser.

The Stars started the second half brightly. Meilaq darted into the box but his grounder finished inches wide before they regained the lead when San Ġwann defender Ryan Zammit deflected the ball into his own net from a Lukic free-kick.

But the scores were level again six minutes later.

Jan Tanti latched on to a Zach Bowman cross and after beating a defender he squeezed the ball home.

The Stars kept hoping though and they regained the lead on 84 minutes.

Grech failed to hold Charles Newuche’s shot and from the rebound substitute Miljan Milivojev hit the ball home for what proved to be the winner.
