5. Learn about the Victoria Lines

Archaeology professor Anthony Bonanno and retired judge Joe Galea Debono will be opening the Din l-Art Ħelwa autumn series of cultural talks with a joint lecture on the military fortifications and sites of archaeological interest to be found along the upper Victoria Lines.

The talk, titled The Upper North-West Front – Military and Archaeological Sites, will be illustrated with photos taken by the two lecturers during their walks over the Victoria Lines from the Dwejra Lines to Fomm ir-Riħ Bay along the old War Department Road.

The lecture will be held on Thursday at 6.30pm at the Judge Caruana Curran Hall at 133 Melita Street, Valletta. Admission is free, but a donation to Din l-Art Ħelwa’s restoration projects is appreciated.

4. Take in some reggae/dub by DF Tram

DF Tram, the San Francisco DJ and producer known for his chilled and innovative sets, is playing three gigs in Malta. Highly regarded in the North American underground electronic music scene, the DJ is known for his unique style of mixing and producing with chilled DJ sets that have been described as ‘thought provoking’. DF Tram released his debut solo artist album on Steve Miller’s Subatomic UK label last year.

DF Tram performs on Friday at Soular (Xemxija), Saturday at Jubilee (Valletta) and next Sunday at Zion (Marsascala).

3. Beat the bass

Bass Culture celebrates two years with a top line-up featuring Irie Welcome Sound (roots dub), EarthRocker (dub reggae on vinyls), Mist - FDM Crew (jungle), Alex Thomson (drum ‘n’ bass) and the Bass Culture Crew. The event is powered by Island Rockers Sound System and takes place on Saturday at Zion, Marsascala. Doors open at 6pm.

2. Remember the new romantics

1980s DJ’s Alex Grech, Tonio Mozzer and Colin Fitz are back for an awesome night of classic 1980s new romantic, electro and synthpop. On the setlist: only the best vinyl records from Soft Cell, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Human League, Ultravox and many more. Top night for anyone wanting to revisit the memories of Polytechnic, Raffles and Graffiti.

Neuro 80s takes place on Saturday at Aria, San Ġwann. Doors open at 10pm.

1. Take home (and give!) free stuff

Ġugar will be holding a free shop in the basement for a whole week. The concept works in a similar way to charity shops, with mostly second-hand items given out at no cost. From books to pieces of furniture, clothes and household items, it is all freely given away.The free shop takes place between Wednesday and October 13 at Ġugar, Republic Street, Valletta.
