The Office of the Prime Minister today criticised the leader of the Opposition’s “irresponsible behaviour” when indicating he was referring to sensitive information he was given during a meeting of the Security Committee while speaking to journalists.

In a statement, the OPM accused the Opposition leader of using this information to build a partisan case and was, consciously or unconsciously, mixing up investigations.

Faced with such irresponsible behavior, the government could either prematurely expose information that would expose the Opposition leader but undermine investigations or allow the investigations to continue unhindered, it said, adding it was opting not to prejudice investigations.

But in a reply, the Nationalist Party retorted that the Opposition leader was well aware of his Constitutional obligations and would not allow the government to lie to the people using the committee as an excuse to hide the truth.

This was what the Home Affairs Minister did when he said that the investigations in institutional corruption at Identity Malta had been started on Identity Malta’s initiative.

The truth was the head of Identity Malta, Joe Vella Bonnici, did not know about the corruption and irregularities taking place under his own nose. For this reason, he should have resigned or been removed.

The PN again called for the independent inquiry it has been requesting for the past month and said the Prime Minister’s behavior showed that he had something to hide.
