Matthew Castillo, Neptunes’ second goalkeeper, will embark on a new experience tomorrow as he will join the squad of Italian club CC Ortigia for a training stint.

This venture will link him with his Neptunes’ team-mate Steve Camilleri who recently moved to the Syracuse-based team.

Castillo, 19, is expected to undergo rigorous training with a group of Italian goalkeepers.

The player began his career with Sliema at a tender age before moving to Neptunes in 2013.

Castillo established himself in the Reds’ Under-20 side that won this year’s national cham-pionship as well as being drafted into the senior team as the understudy of goalkeeper Alan Borg Cole.

Castillo made his senior debut for Neptunes in a crucial match against neighbours San Ġiljan last April.

His numerous saves helped the Balluta Bay team clinch the winter league honours after their 9-8 victory against the Saints was followed by a 5-4 victory over Sliema.

Castillo has also trained with the Malta Under-17 squad and, lately, was included for work-outs with the senior national side under head coach Karl Izzo and goalkeepers’ trainer Adrian Cachia.
