Manchester United recovered from conceding a goal after four minutes to win their first Champions League match of the season when they beat Wolfsburg 2-1 last night.

In Turin, Juventus gained some respite from their domestic woes as they beat Sevilla 2-0 in Group D while Manchester City needed a late Sergio Aguero penalty to win 2-1 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Cristiano Ronaldo equalled Raul as Real Madrid’s all-time top scorer when he netted both goals in a 2-0 win at Swedish side Malmo in Group A while PSG also maintained their perfect record after dismissing Shakhtar Donetsk 3-0 in Ukraine.

At Old Trafford, exactly six years to the day since the two clubs last met, the Group B game followed the same pattern with Wolfsburg taking the lead and United winning.

Daniel Caligiuri opened the scoring after some poor United defending before Juan Mata equalised with a 34th-minute penalty after Caligiuri handled in his own penalty area.

Chris Smalling stole in to score what proved to be the winner after 53 minutes leaving all four teams in the group on three points after CSKA Moscow beat PSV Eindhoven 3-2 in Moscow in the other game.

Juventus were boosted by goals from Alvaro Morata and Simone Zaza and an excellent debut showing from Sami Khedira in their Group D win over Sevilla.

Morata headed an excellent Andrea Barzagli cross past the helpless Sergio Rico on 41 minutes, before substitute Zaza doubled Juve’s lead with a late breakaway goal in the 87th minute.

Khedira was named in the starting line-up for the first time since his move from Real Madrid.

In the night’s other Group D game, Aguero scored a last-minute penalty to give Manchester City a 2-1 comeback win after the Argentine striker had been brought down by Fabian Johnson.

Gladbach, having waited 37 years for their first home game in Europe’s top club competition, stunned their big-name opponents with a 54th minute goal by Lars Stindl.

City, who have goalkeeper Joe Hart to thank for keeping them in the game with half a dozen superb saves, including one to stop Raffael’s penalty, drew level after Nicolas Otamendi’s strike was deflected in by Andreas Christensen for an own goal in the 65th minute.

Former Spain striker Raul, now with New York Cosmos, hit 323 goals in 741 appearances for Real between 1994 and 2010, while Ronaldo has needed a mere 308 games to match him.

The Portugal captain scored his 500th career goal in 753 games for club and country in the 29th minute when he ran clear onto an Isco pass and clipped a clinical shot past Johan Wiland in the Malmo goal.

His second came in the 90th minute after he was set up for a simple finish by substitute Lucas Vazquez.

Paris Saint-Germain also made it two wins from two in Group A, goals in the first quarter of the match from Serge Aurier and David Luiz setting them on their way to three points away to Shakhtar.

Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was looking to equal Pauleta’s PSG record of 109 goals in all competitions when Dario Srna tried to block his late effort only to turn the ball in his own net.

Benfica seized control of Group C when they fought back from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win at 2014 runners-up Atletico Madrid.

Angel Correa fired Atletico ahead in the 23rd minute at the Calderon but Nicolas Gaitan levelled for the visitors in the 36th minute, smashing a first-time shot through a crowd of players, and teenager Goncalo Guedes made it 2-1 six minutes into the second half.

With two matches played, Benfica top the section with a maximum six points, with Atletico in second place on three.

Astana and Galatasaray each have one point after they drew 2-2 in Kazakhstan earlier yesterday.
