Stoke City are hoping for a compromise in the ongoing contract disagreement with striker Jon Walters, the club’s chief executive Tony Scholes has said.

Walters had submitted a transfer request, with Leicester City and Norwich City in a deadline-day race to secure his signature.

But the Potters were unwilling to sanction his sale without bringing in a replacement.

“In 99 per cent of cases, it’s about finding a compromise,” Scholes told BBC.“We hope it’ll be sorted on our terms, he hopes on his terms. Players will always want what they believe they’re worth and why shouldn’t they?”

Liverpool loanee says sorry for 1p row

Liverpool goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux has returned to Championship side Swindon Town on loan after apologising for paying a fine with 5,000 one pence pieces.

The 21-year-old had been sent back to Anfield on Monday after he used the coins to pay his fine for turning up late to training.

“Lawrence is going to come back, he is very humble and very apologetic,” manager Mark Cooper told the BBC.

“He knows the way he behaved was wrong and he has been in the changing room after the game and apologised to the players.

“He asked them if they wanted him back and they all said yes.”

Caceres banned for alleged drink-driving

Juventus defender Martin Caceres missed last night’s Champions League encounter with his former club Sevilla after he was suspended and fined for involvement in a drink-driving incident.

According to a report by Italian news agency Ansa, the Uruguayan was over the alcohol limit when his Ferrari crashed into parked cars and a bus shelter in Turin on the night of September 28.

“The conduct of Martin Caceres on the night of 28 September represents gross violation of his responsibilities as a Juventus player, as well as damaging the image of the club,” the Italian champions said in a statement.

“Juventus have taken disciplinary action against the player in the form of a fine and his suspension from the first team.”

Atletico’s Correa set for the top – Godin

Atletico Madrid striker Angel Correa will be one of the top players in Europe sooner rather than later, says defender Diego Godin.

With Atletico still waiting for the return on their big money signings ahead of the season, it has been the 20-year-old Argentine that has impressed with his chances so far.

“He is a different type of player, he has a lot to give, he has a lot of growing still to do but he has the most important thing which is talent and that is clear to see,” Godin said of Correa.

“He is learning a lot and in a short amount of time he will be one of the top players in Europe.”

Tottenham’s Son suffers foot injury

Tottenham Hotspur’s South Korea forward Son Heung-Min’s fine start to his career with the London side has been halted by a foot injury, the club announced yesterday.

Scoring three times in his first three games made Son an instant hit with supporters but he now seems certain to miss at least the next Premier League game at Swansea City on Sunday as well as today’s Europa League tie in Monaco.

“Son sustained a foot injury in a challenge during Saturday’s win vs Man. City and has spent the past few days being reviewed,” Tottenham’s official twitter feed reported.

“Our medical staff will monitor Son’s progress during his rehabilitation in order to determine when he will be fit to return to training.”

Crystal Palace sign Belgian teenager

Crystal Palace have signed Belgian teenager Jason Lokilo from Anderlecht after receiving international clearance, the Premier League club announced yesterday.

The 17-year-old winger has been training at south London side Palace since the end of July.

“I’m very happy to have signed with Crystal Palace,” Lokilo told the club’s website.

“It’s a good club making progress. They bought Yohan Cabaye, who is a very good player. And it’s very good for wingers!”

Lokilo says he learnt his English watching interviews with Cristiano Ronaldo, one of his favourite players.

FA takes no action against Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho will face no action after the FA cleared him of making discriminatory comments towards then club doctor Eva Carneiro.

The pair had a fiery confrontation on the touchline towards the end of the Blues’ opening game of the season against Swansea, with Mourinho afterwards criticising Carneiro for going on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard.

Carneiro has since parted company with the club.

There had been suggestions Mourinho had used abusive language towards Carneiro but the FA, after analysing audio footage of the incident, announced it “is satisfied that the words used do not constitute discriminatory language under FA Rules”.
