The Office of the President and the Community Chest Fund have set up a ‘time bank’ where people can pledge a number of hours during which they will help other members of society.

The 'bank' was launched by President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca at a press conference.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat has already pledged 20 hours of work with people involved in the Special Olympics. Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has pledged 20 hours of work with drug addicts following a Caritas programme and Archbishop Charles Scicluna has offered 20 hours helping elderly people.

Labour whip Godfrey Farrugia, who has just undergone cancer surgery, will mark his 55th birthday by offering 55 hours of work as a doctor to the Community Chest Fund.

The ‘bank’ will operate through a website called Noffri.com where people can pledge some of their time.

People will also be able to pledge their time on Xarabank on Friday.
The new ‘bank’ will be administered on a voluntary basis by John Bottiglieri.
