Gerrard: Steven Gerrard and the Los Angeles Galaxy ended scoring droughts as they defeated FC Dallas 3-2 on Sunday to rise to the top of the Major League Soccer standings. Gerrard delivered his first goal since his MLS debut more than a month ago, a 57th-minute strike that put his side 3-1 up. Giovani dos Santos and Robbie Keane scored in the first half to end Galaxy’s goalless run of three matches.
Brentford: Marinus Dijk-huizen, head coach of Championship team Brentford has been sacked only eight games into the new season, the London club announced yesterday. Youth coach Lee Carsley, a former Everton midfielder, will take over until the end of the season.
Boca Juniors: Boca: Boca Juniors edged closer to the Argentine league title with a 3-0 win over Banfield at La Bombonera on Sunday that opened with a brilliant early goal by fullback Gino Peruzzi. Strikers Jonathan Calleri and Carlos Tevez added further goals in the final half-hour after Banfield midfielder Nahuel Yeri had been sent off in the 57th minute for a second booking. The win left Boca on 58 points, four more than second-placed San Lorenzo, who were held 1-1 at Tigre on Saturday.
Corinthians: Corinthians moved a step closer to Brazil’s Serie A title on Sunday when they defeated Figueirense 3-1 to open a seven-point lead over Atletico Mineiro with 10 games of the season remaining. Elias, Gil and Renato Augusto, all members of Brazil’s squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Venezuela, scored for Corinthians who extended their lead with Atletico held to a 2-2 draw at bottom club Joinville.
