Malta has agreed to a request by the Albanian government to provide technical assistance to enable Albania to prepare for EU membership.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Albanian Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati discussed bilateral relations when they met on the fringes of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Dr Muscat said that while Malta was prepared to offer technical assistance, it was important that Albania boosted its reform process, particularly through the setting up of independent, democratic institutions.

The two sides discussed investment opportunities notably in the energy sector.

Also discussed were procedures for Albanian children to be adopted by Maltese couples.
