Opposition leader Simon Busuttil has recently been reported saying that even Labourites of goodwill are saying that “This man is talking sense”.

For Busuttil, I am not likely to be considered among those Labourites of goodwill as I have been critical of the PN for decades. I am certainly not one who believes that the leader of the Opposition always talks sense.

I will just give two examples.

The first one when Busuttil was still PN deputy leader, during the 2013 general election campaign. To try and rebut Labour’s harsh criticism on the amount of medicine products that were regularly out of stock (at that time about 130), Busuttil had argued: “Even when we go to a grocery shop we may find that tins of peas are out of stock.” Was he talking sense or nonsense then?

The other instance occurred more recently, when he is now PN and Opposition leader. To try and dent the enormous success Finance Minister Edward Scicluna and this government are having on the management of the country’s economy and finances, Busuttil said on Radio 101: “When this government boasts about the success of the economy, in fact this government would be boasting about someone else’s success.”

Of course, he was shifting the credit from this government to the previous PN administration.

But when speaking about the still existing problem of patients being accommodated in corridors at Mater Dei Hospital while waiting to be transferred to a ward, Busuttil put the blame squarely on this government when the problem was created by the PN government that had built Mater Dei smaller than St Luke’s Hospital.

Did Busuttil talk sense or nonsense on this problem too?
