Thousands of East Lothian residents gathered on Portobello Beach yesterday to watch the controlled demolition of the Cockenzie Power Station which has dominated the skyline at the Firth of Forth for 50 years.

The power station, which was decommissioned in 2013, was detonated by resident Donald McCulloch who won a charity raffle to carry out the demolition of the twin 149m twin chimneys.

Many residents also viewed the spectacle from a flotilla of boats on the Firth of Forth.

Each of the chimney stacks had 150 holes drilled in it which were filled with explosives and the power station's turbine hall was also demolished and the boiler house building beneath the chimneys will be removed at a later date.

The power station, constructed in 1967, generated 150 terawatt hours of electricity every year at its peak.
