A few days ago I approached the taxi rank outside City Gate. I told a taxi driver that I wanted to go to the top of Rue d’Argens, Gżira.

His immediate reply was that it would cost me €20. I complained about the price and offered €15. What happened to the meter system, I wonder?

The first four taxis in line refused to take me, saying that they would lose their place.

Only the taxi driver at the very end of the queue agreed to take me to my destination at the agreed fare of €15.

We must have got to Gżira in record time, zigzagging past the Msida traffic as if there was no tomorrow.

Another thing about Maltese taxi drivers is that they never ever give way to anybody.
