Albert Naudi of Għarb (September 18) seems to demand that refuse collection in central Attard should be abandoned so that he can drive through our village core entirely unimpeded.

The published image he took with his mobile camera hides the fact that the road was in fact not blocked because this is a ‘Y’ junction and he could have continued on his journey by simply turning right. Instead, he seems to have stopped, got out to argue and caused a traffic jam in our street.

The refuse lorry arrives here after the early morning rush hour traffic and parks for about 15 minutes while the hard-working refuse collectors gather all the rubbish bags from the adjoining narrow lanes (through which the refuse lorry cannot pass).

The correspondent’s spoilt attitude is quite typical of Malta: motorists here expect free parking on all roads and garage owners expect free ownership of the road in front of them.

Unless more restrictions (financial and logistic) are imposed on private cars (as in more organised countries), the motor car is eventually going to destroy Malta.

Why should our village core be rendered a bypass for speeding cars instead of being accessible only to residents’ cars (even if these are subject to annual parking fee) like Mdina?

When will the Attard bypass be built? Next century?

When is work on the Kappara flyover starting?

A more efficient public transport service will not improve traffic congestion unless the private car is harnessed.

But we also need flyovers, tunnels, bridges (not to Gozo, thank you) and, possibly, an underground railway system in Malta.

We’re supposed to have the best European economy, so why aren’t such big infrastructural projects starting in earnest?
