The government is making savings of €300 million from power and fuel, Nationalist MEP David Casa said in a workshop in Brussels. He asked where the money is going and why it is not being passed on to consumers.
"The government is saving €200 million per year from electricity generation and another €100 million per year from fuel supplies. How is this money being used? Why is it that this money is not being passed on to the consumer?"
He said the savings were a direct result of falling oil prices and challenged the Energy Minister to publish all prices/records of energy related contracts.
The MEP appealed to the government to continue working on the previous government's energy plan and thus continue investing in the national distribution grid because otherwise, various parts of Malta would continue to suffer regular electricity cuts.
Casa reiterated that consumers should benefit financially from plunging oil prices and reminded the government of its failure to deliver on its electoral transparency pledge.
