Tell us something about yourself.

I’m a fine artist, specialising in photo-graphy and residing in Xagħra. And I run a kiosk at St Marija Bay, in Comino.

How often do you travel?

Few trips are planned from a very long time ahead. Usually my travels are business-related, but I do mix work and play.

Do you remember your first time abroad, and can you tell us about it?

First time abroad was when I was barely three years old in Bergamo with my mum and we stayed with close friends of ours. I remember loads from that trip, from the morning Nutella to the statues of I Puffi (the Smurfs) under a bridge.

I also remember falling down the stairs at our friends’ house!

Best holiday ever, and why?

A road trip in the US last year. I got to see amazing natural landscapes in a span of eight hours. From lakes to desert to four hours of forest. The living and the dead, deserted towns ... you name it, I saw it. It started off from Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, driving down to San Diego – a gorgeous old town – then living it large in St Barbara, chilling at Carmel Valley, shopping in San Francisco ... I slept in a cabin at Mammoth Lakes, partied in Las Vegas and saw Cirque du Soleil. Then I flew to St Louis for a four-day business trip, watched a baseball match and flooded a room in an old train station that had been converted into a hotel. Finally, I ended up in New York at Ground Zero. I also managed to take something off my bucket list; one hell of a ride through Death Valley in a Dodge Challenger, breaking the speed limit.

Which place would you never visit?

I wish to visit everywhere at least once.

I love getting lost and experiencing the place off the beaten track

Best travel companion?

My partner Sandro.

And what’s the worst your travel companion could do?

Try to set a timetable. I love getting lost and experiencing the place off the beaten track.

What do you usually look for?

Definitely culture and food. I also enjoy meeting the locals and some clubbing every once in a while.

The perfect holiday would be?

A couple of weeks long to have time to see and experience the sites. The location is not that important.

What’s the furthest you’ve ever been from home?

The US, so far.

Package tours or DIY?

Definitely DIY.

What would be the best travel advice you can give?

Keep an open mind – and always keep the address of where you’re staying with you at all times. Be courteous to the locals, and smile.

Flying – hate it/love it/neutral?

I don’t mind it. I enjoy seeing the world from a bird’s-eye view.

The one place you have never get tired of visiting?

Definitely pretty Amsterdam, which I have visited three three times so far. I first visited with a group of friends, right after Holland placed second in the World Cup. Then I spent a weekend during a very cold February and right after a break-up, and finally I also experienced it during the gay parade. Awesome every time.

Describe one memory that stuck with you from a place.

I have so many ... Exhibiting my gas mask collection in Paris; getting lost in the magical Prague and purchasing my favourite photographer’s prints (Jan Saudek); getting tattooed in Manchester and watching Beirut live; bar hopping in Liverpool with friends celebrating a birthday; drinking champagne and breaking a seat in a taxi on the ride to the hotel; partying on a Greek island with people from 90 different countries; getting locked up in a maze of corridors either side with padlocked doors ...

You met the coolest people at?

Every bar I’ve been to, in any given place.

Keep the address of where you’re staying with you at all times

Your best budget tip to save money on holiday?

Go where the locals go.

If you actually had to live away from Malta, where would you pick?

Either Germany or Holland. I would consider Japan for a short stint.

What’s the one thing you would never do in a foreign country?

Nothing really comes to mind, apart from getting arrested.

Anything on your travel bucket list?

I would love to drive from Morocco across to Egypt and then down south. It would be a dodgy and scary trip, but I have been wanting to do this for a very long time.

Travel is important to you because?

I get to explore and experience a different way of life. It heightens the senses.

What has travel taught you?

To be open-minded.

Where would you retire and why?

To our beautiful Malta, even though I love travelling.

Whenever flying back, I always look forward to that first whiff of salty air on leaving the airplane.
