Snooker: Judd Trump remained on course for his fifth ranking title as he beat Stuart Bingham 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters, yesterday. From 2-1 down, Trump won five of the last six frames to book his second appearance in the final in Shanghai, having been denied the title by John Higgins in 2012. In his ninth ranking final, Trump will face Kyren Wilson, who upset Mark Allen 6-1, with a top prize of £85,000 at stake.

Golf: Tiger Woods announced that he underwent back surgery and will be sidelined for the rest of this year. The 14-times major champion, who had a similar procedure on his back in March 2014, hopes to return to competition in early 2016. “This is certainly disappointing, but I’m a fighter,” Woods, 39, said in a statement. “I’ve been told I can make a full recovery, and I have no doubt that I will.” As a result of the microdiscectomy surgery, which was performed in Utah on Wednesday, Woods will not be able to compete in the PGA Tour’s October 15-18 Frys.com Open.

Davis Cup: Andy and Jamie Murray put Great Britain within touching distance of their first Davis Cup final for 37 years as they came from behind to earn a five-set doubles win (4-6 6-3 6-4 6-7 6-4) over Australia in Glasgow, yesterday. The brothers overcame Lleyton Hewitt and Sam Groth after a gruelling encounter to put Britain 2-1 ahead in their semi-final at the Emirates Arena. The hosts are now favourites to secure a final berth when Andy Murray faces Bernard Tomic today, with Dan Evans scheduled to play Thanasi Kokkinakis later in the day.

Other SF: Argentina lead Belgium 2-1.

Rugby Union: While Twickenham erupted to greet the all-important fourth try in England’s 35-11 Rugby World Cup victory over Fiji on Friday, the man who scored it, Billy Vunipola, admitted afterwards that he did not know there was a bonus point to be had. “To be honest, I didn’t know that bonus points counted in the World Cup,” Vunipola, 22, said. “I was just more excited that I had scored a try.”
