Updated Monday -  Large waves washed away three cars from the south quay at Cirkewwa while several others were dragged into each other.

The first car, a Peugeot 206, was dragged into Paradise Bay yesterday afternoon while several other parked cars were pushed into each other like toys by the swirling water as owners watched helplessly, unable to reach them.

Another two cars were washed into the sea overnight while other vehicles were towed to a safer area by members of the Civil Protection Department.

The cars are believed to belong to people who parked them there and went to Gozo for the long weekend.

On the coast road, plastic barriers to control the flow of traffic around the road works were pushed by the strong wind yesterday, creating a traffic hazard. Some drivers stopped to put them back in place in order to avoid danger.

The wind is also forecast to be strong today but will gradually die down.
