The doubling of fines for those talking on their mobile phones or texting while driving is most welcome. Hopefully it comes into force very soon. This is a very common sight and it is high time that offenders realise that talking and texting while driving is a dangerous habit as it lessens one’s concentration while at the wheel.
Only recently, a van driver talking on his mobile phone nearly ran over a woman on a pedestrian crossing in Mosta, just opposite the Rotunda.
However, drivers ought to abstain from this bad habit not because of fines but because they realise that they can be of great danger to themselves and to others. Although, honestly speaking, €100 does not offer much of a deterrent. A suspension of a driver’s licence for a month would surely prove more effective.
