SLIEMA WANDERERS 2
Mifsud 59, Kerlon 72
MOSTA 1
Fidelis 9
Sliema gave early pacesetters Mosta their first defeat this afternoon.
Nigerian striker Saviour Fidelis took just nine minutes to justify his inclusion in the starting line-up when the will-o'-the-wisp striker went on a long run before slotting the ball past the hapless Glenn Zammit. The central striker had the support of the ex-Birkirkara Edin Murga. Few moments later, the latter was in sight of goal but Luke Dimech’s tackle averted the danger.
The Wanderers had a couple of promising attacks through Mifsud and Rafael Ledesma which were self-aborted through careless finishing.
Sliema saw light at the end of the tunnel as Kerlon hit the woodwork after being put through by Ledesma when Sliema opened on the offensive after the break. Nine minutes later, Sliema struck.
A lightning first-time move between Marko Potezica, in for Mark Scerri who was stretchered off after five minutes and the ever-steady Muir had the latter floating the ball perfectly towards Mifsud. The nippy striker made no mistake from close-range.
The baton was still in Mosta’s hands. Ekani skied in an inviting ball for Manolito Micallef who had to exercise his neck muscles to reach the ball and arched a header over Zammit but the ball finished just over the bar.
However, this move failed to stop Sliema from taking the lead in 72 minutes. Substitute Pedrinho’s predatory skills were soon in evidence when he was first on a Johann Bezzina’s pass to square for Kerlon to hammer the ball past Borg.
