Injuries sustained in traffic accidents in Gozo went up by 64 per cent last year when compared to 2010.

The increase in slight injuries was 47 per cent while the number of grievous injuries was one-and-a-half times more than those reported in 2010.

These figures are part of a National Statistics publication 'Gozo in Figures 2015', launched in Gozo this afternoon.

The publication integrates 12 statistical topics, including demography, education, employment, the economy, business, transport and use of renewable energy.

The following are some interesting statistics found in the publication. The publication in full can be read in the pdf link below.

* In 2013, 39 per cent of all registered marriages in Malta were civil marriages. At a regional level, the brunt of this proportion was borne by the Malta region with 40 per cent of marriages being civil ones. In the Gozo and Comino region, this percentage was 22 per cent.

* In 2014, the ratio of Gozo resident University of Malta graduates per 1,000 population was 10.4 against the Malta counterpart of 8.2. This ratio was particularly evident at Bachelor's degree level and above. For Mcast graduates, the ratio for Gozo residents per 1,000 population was 7.2 against Malta's 6.1.

* In 2013, regional GDP for Gozo and Comino made up 5.1 per cent of the national GDP.

* Injuries sustained in traffic accidents in Gozo went up by 64 per cent in 2014 compared to 2010. The increase in slight injuries was 47 per cent while the number of grievous injuries was one-and-a-half times over that reported in 2010.

* In 2014, Gozo had nine per cent of the registered vehicle stock. Of the 266,000 passenger cars registered at a national level, 7.7 per cent were in Gozo.

* In 2014, 4.6 million passengers travelled between Malta and Gozo.

* In 2014, over 944,000 persons visited Gozo and Comino. Sixteen per cent of these, around 153,000 persons, were tourists. Of these, 40 per cent used a low cost airline to travel to Malta.

* Figures for 2014 indicate that 72 per cent of tourist bed-places in Gozo and Comino is in self-catering establishments including farmhouses, and 28 per cent in collective accommodation. Bed stock in self-catering establishments is concentrated in Xaghra, Zebbug and Gharb.

* In 2014, 16 per cent of all photovoltaic installations in Malta was registered in Gozo, double the proportion registered in 2010.
