Charles Spiteri writes:

Her quiet demise on August 3, aged 91, reflected the way she lived: always available but never obtrusive.

A homemaker, her husband Anton had died in 1988. He was a founder member and president of the Gozo Civic Council, an innovative businessman and philanthropist.

The eldest of six children is Antoine, the diocesan president of the Catholic Action Movement. Spinster Josette cared for her day and night, not least during these last months when her medical condition needed constant attention. Three of the siblings live overseas but Maria was a popular grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs Vassallo fostered strong relationships with all relatives, including a brother and six sisters who survive her. Until stopped by ill health, she was active in various charity events and organisations. She had a smile for everyone – not least on her death bed.

The funeral at St George’s Basilica was led by Archpriest Emeritus Joseph Farrugia, who was a regular visitor, and nephew-in-law Mgr George Tabone. Bishop Mario Grech participated in the congregation.
