It was reported by Reuters in The Sunday Times of Malta (September 6) that the reasons given by Hungarian officials for blocking migrants and preventing them from moving on to Austria and Germany were “as a defence of Europe’s prosperity, identity and ‘Christian values’ against an influx of mainly Muslim migrants”.
There are no Christian values that promote exclusion and indifference towards suffering human beings whatever their colour, race or creed. The fundamental law on which Christianity is based is love God with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself.
If Europe wants to abide by Christian principles and promote Christian values, it has to be more generous and offer a helping hand to these brethren who are fleeing their country due to war and persecution.
All European partners have to show will and determination by demonstrating that they want this tragedy to come to an immediate halt. Countries that raise walls and do not want to contribute in the solidarity towards migrants are not worthy of being part of Europe.
One of the basic principles on which the European Union was founded is solidarity and there are no Christian values without solidarity towards the weakest and the most vulnerable in society.
