5. Understand electronic music

Electronic Music Malta is hosting a discussion with the aim of examining various aspects of noise levels, including the effects of exposure to excessive sound levels in public venues, the certification/measurement of sound in such venues and the science of effective acoustic treatment.

A sound engineer, an ENT specialist, people suffering from hearing disability (coming from the entertainment scene) and a specialist in acoustic treatment will be speaking on the night. The audience will also have the opportunity to witness some experiments covering acoustics and noise levels.

The Science of Sound in Electronic Music: 106 decibels takes place on September 24 at 6pm at Spazju Kreattiv, St James Cavalier, Valletta.

4. Walk towards the light

Teleportation sounds like the stuff of science fiction, but a few years ago scientists showed that it is actually possible. It was Anton Zeilinger, one of Europe’s most influential quantum physicists, who made teleportation a reality. As part of the centenary celebrations of the Faculty of Science, the professor will give a talk about his work in quantum physics, how entanglement allows scientists to do bizarre things and his quest to understand what light really is.

Teleportation and What is Light takes place on Friday at 7pm at the University of Malta Valletta campus. Entrance is free but registration via an e-mail to andre.xuereb@um.edu.mt is necessary.

3. Enjoy some boylesque

Burlesque à la Verve is back with a different experience – a club night featuring boylesque for the first time in Malta. The event brings together classical burlesque, comedy, music and boylesque which, as the name suggests, features male dancers rather than the more traditional female artists. The event features the Maltese Undine LaVerve, Austrian Fifi Filour, Maltese singer Officially Larissa and DJ Toty with a rock and metal set on the decks. The night’s special guests are Texan Pretty Boy Rock and Mr Blanco from Amsterdam.

Burlesque à la Verve takes place on Friday at Remedy, Coconut Grove, Paceville. Doors open at 9.30pm.

1. Check out this llama

Alternative band Dull Eyed Llama is back with a new set of tunes after their debut gig at Rock the South in April. The crew is made up of new guitarist and singer Sam Christie, Carl Caruana on synth and Rebecca Theuma on drums.

Self-described as a cross “between The Cure and Lemon Heads, that wishes he was born in the 80s”, Dull Eyed Llama use 1980s-inspired synths and guitar riffs dripping with Yuck influences.

The gig takes place on Friday at 9.30pm at Maori, Marsamxett, Valletta. Entrance is free.
