Għaqda Regatta Nazzjonali, the Maltese rowing federation, was formally accepted as a full member of world governing body FISA (Fédération Internationale des Sociétés d’Aviron), yesterday.
The decision was taken during a Congress in Chambery, France.
The Maltese federation has been making significant progress lately and according to Joseph N. Grima, president of the organisation, they want to continue developing.
“We are fully aware that rowing as practised in Malta is part of our tradition and culture but we think this sport can grow,” he said.
“It is encouraging that rowing is popular among youths so we want more athletes to join us.”
The federation is investing significantly in improving the practices associated with traditional rowing and they also intend to get into other forms of the sport including sliding-seat rowing and coastal and indoor races.
“Joining FISA was essential for us to achieve our objectives as accession will mean that we may now benefit from their well-established coaching and development programmes,” Prof. Grima added.
“It will also mean that Maltese rowers can now take part in international events, such as the European or World Championships.”
