Over 2,500 farmers and young food leaders will gather in Milan between October 3 and 6 to find answers and solutions to the sustainable future of food and Milan Expo’s ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’ theme.

Participants, hailing from 120 corners, including Australia, North America, around 30 Asian countries, 30 European destinations, 20 Latin American places and 35 African countries, are the change-makers within the food system aiming to shape new ideas for the future.

The event sets out to inspire, create and refine ideas and models that will contribute to feeding the planet in a good, clean and fair way

Slow Food and the Slow Food Youth Network strongly believe that an interdisciplinary group of food professionals from diverse backgrounds can bring about great change in the food system.

The Terra Madre Giovani – We Feed the Planet group – consists of more than 1,500 small-scale producers from countries like Uganda, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Germany and Brazil. Their participation is made possible thanks to a large international crowd-funding campaign (www. wefeedtheplanet. com).

Also participating in the event will be over 1,000 young chefs, food specialists, scientists, designers, academics, IT professionals and entrepreneurs, who will be bringing their specific knowledge and expertise to the table.

The event’s main aim is to frame solutions to key issues related to the world’s current food system, including:

• Innovation: how can we produce food in the future?

• Power: how can we redistribute power in global food systems evenly?

• Heritage: how can we preserve our heritage?

• Message: what are the best communication strategies for change?

The answers to these questions and a suggested action plan will be presented during a grand finale on the last day, which will take place within Expo 2015.

Conferences, discussions, hackathons and workshops will be jointly organised with programme partners, including FAO, IFAD, Fondazione ACRA, Oxfam, Agriterra, Nordic Food Lab, the Sustainable Food Trust, Het Nieuwe Instituut and Besh.

Key speakers like Slow Food International president Carlo Petrini, activist, chef and Chez Panisse owner Alice Waters, Stuffed & Starved author Raj Patel and author and economics professor at the University of Paris-Sud Serge Latouche will contribute by offering insight and knowledge through presentations, interviews and discussions.

The event is being organised by Slow Food, the Slow Food Youth Network, the University of Gastronomic Sciences and the Terra Madre Foundation, in collaboration with Fondazione Cariplo, Compagnia di San Paolo, the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity and Milan council.

It will take place in the centre of Milan in two major locations: the urban farmers’ market, Mercato Metropolitano, and Superstudio, both in the Porta Genova area.
