An exercise to test the preparedness of the Civil Protection Department should an earthquake hit Malta is currently in full swing.

The exercise is being held in partnership with Sicilian rescue forces, who would be expected to support the Maltese authorities should a major natural calamity hit Malta.

The exercise will test command, control and communications, rescue, evacuation and care, including the coordination of the Italian authorities as well as local forces including the police, the AFM and the hospitals.

A command centre has been set up on the Gozo helipad.
