More than 60 per cent of the population aged over 60 were in possession of tallinja card, Malta Public Transport said today.

This, it said, amounted to 63,000 senior citizens.

The company said this was a major milestone that formed an integral part of its plan to change the culture of bus ticketing in Malta. It was also an important indicator of the mobility of elderly people who benefitted from reduced fares of 25c per journey and from a maximum capping of 50c per day and €2 per week for unlimited travel in Malta and Gozo.

The company said that as from October 1, it would be halting the temporary 30c concession fare which was kept available on the bus as a transition for holders of a Kartanzjan/60+ Maltese Identity Card, holders of a Special ID and children when paying in cash.

Only the €2 ticket will be available for purchase in cash on the bus after October 1, it said.
