A Somali man who escaped from detention in Malta, fleeing to Italy before being arrested in Germany, has been jailed for two months.

Inspector Darren Buhagiar charged Abdurahman Yousuf Adam, 28, with leaving the island without informing the authorities. He was arrested in Germany and returned to Malta.

The court heard how the man managed to leave Malta in September 2013. He first went to Italy and then made his way into Germany, where he was arrested.

Before Magistrate Doreen Clarke, Mr Adam admitted the charges and was sentenced to two months imprisonment.

Lawyer Noel Bartolo was defence counsel.
