The turbines and auxiliary equipment for the turbines of the Delimara gas power station are due for shipping to Malta from the Siemens plant in Sweden in November.

Gas turbine 2 is currently on the assembly line, the final process before packaging and shipping. The other two turbines are in a slightly more advanced stage.

The SGT-800 turbine model that will be used at the Delimara power station, the latest model developed by Siemens, weighs around 36 tonnes. Siemens explained that during assembly of the turbines, 26,142 separate parts are needed. The other SGT-800's in service around the world have proven to be 99.4% reliable to date.

The Delimara power station will have three SGT-800 gas turbines and a steam turbine that will be used in a combined cycle. This method maximises the efficiency of the process.

The power station is expected to start producing electricity in June.
