Four dogs were welcomed to the Police Force today with the rank of 'sergeant', the police said.

A ceremony during which the dogs showed off their skills was held before Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela and Commissioner Michael Cassar.

The 'sergeants' are Miko, Marius, Cheque and Renvey.

The German Shepherds have boosted the Canine Section to 33 dogs. The new dogs were brought from the Czech Republic following sponsorship by HSBC and MIA.

Mr Abela said the Canine Section never had so many dogs. They would be especially useful for security duties for CHOGM and an EU meeting due to be held in Malta later this year, as well as in ani-drug investigations.
