Rolando: Portugal defender Rolando has joined Olympique de Marseille from Porto, the French club said yesterday without disclosing any further details. Centre back Rolando, 30, has spent the last two seasons on loan at Napoli, Inter Milan and Anderlecht.

Leggat dies: Graham Leggat, who held the record for the quickest English top-flight hat-trick for over 51 years until Southampton’s Sadio Mane broke it in May, has died aged 81. The Scotland international scored three goals in exactly three minutes for Fulham in a club record 10-1 win over Ipswich Town in 1963. Mane netted a hat-trick in two minutes 56 seconds in Southampton’s 6-1 win over Aston Villa in the penultimate Premier League match of last season.

Under-21: Everton defender Brendan Galloway is among three players who have withdrawn through injury from the England U-21 squad to play USA and Norway. Goalkeeper Christian Walton, of Bury, and Hull’s forward Chuba Akpom will also not be joining up with Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions for the double-header. Southgate’s side take on a US U-23 team at Deepdale on Thursday, before starting their European campaign in Norway on Monday.

US veterans: English Premier League veterans Tim Howard and Geoff Cameron were named as part of a 23-man US squad for upcoming friendlies against Peru and Brazil. Everton goalkeeper Howard and Stoke City defender Cameron have not played for their national team this year. The matches will be an important preparation for the October 10 play-off against Mexico in Pasadena, California.

Garcia: Athletic Bilbao have completed the signing of Spain international Raul Garcia from Atletico Madrid. The 29-year-old midfielder, who played more than 200 matches for Atletico, passed his medical with the Basque club yesterday before putting pen to paper on a four-year contract. Garcia started his career with home-town club Osasuna before moving to Atletico in 2007.

Empoli: Empoli have been busy ahead of the closure of the transfer window, announcing the arrival of three players. The Serie A side have landed midfielder Leandro Paredes from Roma, striker Marko Livaja from Rubin Kazan and Pescara defender Uros Cosic. The latter is the only permanent arrival, signing a deal until June 2018.
