Traffic in Sliema is frequently congested, particularly at the Strand, Tower Road and Tigné Seafront. This is creating considerable pollution in the area and giving rise to dangerous situations because of road rage incidents.

There are four main reasons for driving through Sliema, namely (1) residence (2) business/employment (3) shopping and (4) leisure.

Traffic created by those who visit Sliema for shopping and leisure can easily be reduced through a congestion tax (similar to the one in Valletta). Even a €1 per hour levy could discourage many such visitors from driving through Sliema.

Additionally, a park-and-ride facility should be built in the vicinity, possibly on Manoel Island or at Ta’ Xbiex. This would also help reduce traffic congestion in Sliema.
