After losing only three league games last season Juventus have now lost the first two of the new campaign as a deserved 2-1 defeat at Roma yesterday condemned the champions to their worst-ever Serie A start.

Not since Bologna in 1941 have the champions of Italy begun the defence of their title with successive defeats and Juve, beaten 1-0 at home by Udinese last week, have never previously suffered such a start.

They can have no complaints about yesterday’s defeat either as last year’s runners-up struck through Miralem Pjanic and Edin Dzeko before Paulo Dybala struck late on for Juventus who finished with 10 men with Patrice Evra having been sent off.

Inter maintained their perfect start when Stevan Jovetic earned them a 2-1 win at Carpi.

There was no joy, however, for Napoli who were held to a 2-2 home draw by Sampdoria while Torino beat Fiorentina 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium.

Lazio’s miserable week continued yesterday when Stefano Pioli’s men followed up their Champions League elimination with a 4-0 defeat at Chievo.

In the main match, Roma were on top throughout and unlucky not to be ahead at half-time after Pjanic hit a post.

The Bosnian’s radar was better calibrated after the hour when he curled home an excellent free-kick to put Roma ahead.

Juventus then had defender Evra dismissed for a second booking before another Bosnian, Dzeko, newly arrived on a season-long loan from Manchester City, rose well to head the second.

Dybala pulled one back three minutes from time to set up a frantic finale but Juve could not find the equaliser and are without a point.

In Naples, a pair of first-half goals from Gonzalo Higuain had Napoli in charge but Eder netted twice in as many minutes just before the hour – the first a penalty – to earn the visitors a point.

Inter again relied on their Montenegrin striker Jovetic to claim their second league victory yesterday.

He opened the scoring in the 31st minute and, after Antonio Di Gaudio had levelled for the Serie A newcomers nine minutes from time, won it with an 89th-minute penalty.

Lazio were well beaten at Chievo, Riccardo Meggiorini, Alberto Paloschi and Valter Birsa netting in the first half before Paloschi’s second of the game midway through the second half sealed a crushing win for the Flying Donkeys.

Three goals in nine second half minutes from Emiliano Moretti, Fabio Quagliarella and Daniele Baselli enabled Torino to come from behind and sink Fiorentina, who had led through Marcos Alonso’s 10th minute goal, 3-1.
